CASE STUDY

Topic: Poverty in Bali, Indonesia, rural areas.

Organization Chosen: Yayasan Peduli.

This organization is an Indonesian NGO in which it’s main goal is to develop long term sustainable solutions for Indonesians, including reducing and avoiding poverty.

This organization is trying to help reduce poverty by providing a free working people in which people can work in without a fear of being exploited, therefore living with dignity and respect needed to build their own future. One of their projects include reducing poverty in the North East of Bali, in which people were living on as low as 10 cents daily. This organization provides emergency health supplies and plans a comprehensive program of activities to eradicate illnesses. The next step would be the organization begins to work on providing education and establishing businesses to allow people to raise themselves while lifting them out of poverty.

Something that I like about this organization is not only because of it’s optimism but also because of it’s thinking. They believe that once the people are not in life threatening condition, they believe in only stimulating further growth and not just giving them money and leaving, but instead helping them set up businesses and thinking more long term.

Some questions that I have about Yayasan Peduli is that how do they set up the businesses and how can they ensure that the businesses will continue to flourish, because the people there are very poor. Maybe not even enough money to purchase things? Some other questions I have is where they get their funds from and how they are financially organized and in which village or how the money will be spent?

I think that they’re organization is a very interesting organization to model after, especially their philosophy which is uniquely different from most of the rest. I think that we can also use this organization’s contacts and familiarity in that region and further assist them with extra funds and supplies. We can also merge together and spread our passionate help to the whole of Asia, helping anyone in need.

East Bali Poverty Project

This NGO is about reducing poverty and to promote culturally sensitive sustainable development in impoverished rural communities that have little or no choice to alleviate their own plight.

They are trying to eliminate poverty by education, teaching the children, in which they must be healthy. They will do this by first having organic farming for long term food supply and self reliance and also improve school meals and education.

Some things that I like is their theme, “partnership with the community, with the well-being of disadvantaged children as the initial priority.” I think that them having actual success is also good, instead of just spreading information, they actually did something, building schools, giving them good meals, etc. It’s also good that instead of focusing on short term goals, they have long term goals, focusing on the newer generation, children by giving them good nutrition and good education.

Some questions that I have on this organization is the founder, the British guy, how did he manage to gain funds and support for his cause. How did he also feel a connection to the people of Bali and whether did he manage to also gain the government’s funds or help or even supplies.

I think that we can not only model after this organization because of it’s focus on long term goals, especially good nutrition and good education. Also something else that I admire is that a foreigner was the one who actually felt connected to the poor people of east Bali that he was actually willingly able to help the people

CASE STUDY PART TWO

1. What is the specific topic your group decided to focus on?

Our specific topic that we chose to focus on is poverty in Bali, Indonesia.

2. Which organization did you choose to focus on and why?

The organization that we chose to focus on is Yayasan Peduli, we decided to focus on this organization is because we can understand their philosophy and we think it could be the solution. By providing a free working people in which people can work in without a fear of being exploited, therefore living with dignity and respect needed to build their own future, poverty can be solved. This is a much better choice of solution instead of just giving them money like what some organizations are doing. This is a solution that thinks long term which we think is great. Our organization will definitely use Yayasan Peduli as a role model and when given a chance will definitely help and interact with them and their projects.

3. What exactly are they doing to try and combat or change your issue?

They are trying to provide a free working people in which people can work in without a fear of being exploited, therefore living with dignity and respect needed to build their own future in Indonesia.

4. What are some of the things you like about their program?

Some things that I like about this program are it’s long term members and long term solutions instead of the usual short term solutions. This program also interacts with the villagers which is good in understanding their needs.

5. How do you plan to become involved with this organization or model your action plan after it?

We plan to model our philosophy like theirs, however, we will bring their ideals further forward. Besides providing a free economy, we will also bring education to the doorsteps of the villagers, through funds, and supplies donations from schools and governments.
